Aquatics Class Descriptions

We are committed to building water safety and swimming skills for all ages. Our programming includes youth and adult swim lessons, competitive swim teams, aquatic fitness, and professional certification courses.

If you're unsure which level is right for you or your child, please review the class requirements below or contact us at silvia.ihme@mpls.k12.mn.us or 612-668-3095. We're here to help you find the perfect fit.

Youth Swim Lessons

Community Ed Youth Swim Lessons focus on safety topics, swim technique and endurance. The goal of our program is to master the skills of each level before moving on to the next class. For that reason, students may take the same class multiple times in order to perfect their skills and ensure their safety. After each session, instructors communicate with parents and provide an achievement card indicating which level to enroll in for the following session. For new participants, please review the class requirements to ensure the appropriate enrollment level. Each skill in class descriptions should be mastered before considering enrollment in the next level.

Adult Swim Lessons

Note: A “Women-Centered (Ages 15+)” version of adult swim lessons are occasionally offered.

Youth Swim Team Practice

Youth Swim Team practice sessions are offered in partnership with the Minneapolis Lake Monsters swim team across four age and ability groups: Novice, Age Group 1, Age Group 2, and Senior. Participants are NOT REQUIRED to compete in swim meets, although it is certainly encouraged. IMPORTANT: All registrations will be placed on a waitlist and new participants will be notified once they are able to be added to the roster. All swimmers will be required to register annually with USA Swimming and Minnesota Swimming Inc. regardless of level or participation in swim meets. Please visit the Lake Monsters website for more details.

Sliding Scale Fees

Many aquatics courses are offered using sliding scale fees, which allows MPS to improve accessibility for families from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. Class fees are presented as four options that allow families to select the fee that best aligns with their financial situation. Discounts DO NOT apply for courses with sliding scale fees.
