Hmong-Led Artists Mural Bus Tour
This past weekend, Minneapolis Community Education hosted a cultural bus tour across the Twin Cities with the "Hmong-Led Artists Mural Bus Tour", led by talented local artists Kao Lee Thao, Christina Vang, and Xee Reiter. Participants who joined experienced a day of art, culture, and connection.
The adventure began with delicious pastries from award-winning Hmong Chef Diane Moua of Diane's Place. We then were guided by the artists throughout Minneapolis and St. Paul, stopping at numerous locations where their artwork has transformed public spaces. From the WE mural in Bloomington to Kao Lee's public art installation, from the Jackson Street Ramp Mural to the Mekong River Sidewalk Etching at Peking Garden.
Additional highlights included an in-progress mural on Front Avenue, St. Paul's Creative Enterprise Zone, Kao Lee's Studio, and The Jungle Theater. Throughout the tour, our artist guides shared not just their art but their personal journeys, creative processes, and the cultural significance behind each piece.
"It was an amazing cultural experience visiting Hmong-created murals around the Twin Cities," one participant shared. "Having on hand three wonderful Hmong woman artist creators of these gorgeous and intriguing murals was so interesting and edifying, as each artist shared their art, their backgrounds, and also opening up with their very personal histories and stories."
Thank you to the artists—Kao Lee Thao, Christina Vang, and Xee Reiter—for sharing their art, and to all participants who made this tour such a great experience!
