MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Minneapolis Community Education celebrated National Community Education Day on Saturday, November 9, at Bancroft Community School. The event featured a variety of activities for both youth and adults, including family yoga, mini art workshops, bingo, and a bike-powered smoothie blender experience.
Guests were encouraged to join in on activities through a “Join & Win” challenge. Each activity completed earned them a stamp in a Community Day Passport. Once their booklet was full, they could enter one of two raffle drawings.
Guests gathered for bingo at the Community Education Day Open House on November 9, 2024. Bingo prizes were donated by community partners and local businesses.
“This event was all about what we do best—bringing people together and building community,” said Aviva Hillenbrand, Executive Director of Minneapolis Community Education. The open house also included a special recognition of Community Education staff members, nominated by their colleagues, who exemplified the core values of Minneapolis Public Schools.
Staff members honored included Rosalind Bakion for Equity, Representation & Anti-Racism; Nancy Solano-Gonzalez for Physical and Emotional Safety & Wellbeing; Edgar Ullaguari for Relationships, Trust & Communication; and Amy Frey for Shared Decision Making & Voice.
Community Education staff worked hard for months to make this event possible. Partners and volunteers also helped bring this event all together. The day concluded with a powerful performance by Mexica Yolotl, a traditional Aztec dance group, celebrating pre-Hispanic cultural heritage.
