Public History in MN: Conversations & “Many Voices, Many Stories, One Place” Exhibit

Sunday, Feb. 23 | 10 a.m.–1:30 p.m. | Fort Snelling

Join Jennings Mergenthal, Public History Graduate Student at the University of Minnesota and Beth Calderon, Blake Social Studies Teacher for conversations about the influence of public history in Minnesota. After in introduction and framing for our day, we will take in the new exhibit at Historic Fort Snelling:  "Many Voices, Many Stories, One Place" exploring the complex history of this important place. After viewing the exhibit, we'll meet again as a group for an Indigenous lunch and reflections on this exhibit -- what it does and what it doesn't do.

An Afternoon of African Storytelling (55+)

Wednesday, Feb. 26 | 1–2:30 p.m. | Westminster Presbyterian Church

Learn and participate in an afternoon of African-based storytelling, in the oral, interactive tradition used by African communities to share life lessons and history that strengthens the community.  

Minneapolis' Black Storytellers Alliance is a nonprofit organization made up of master storytellers, educators, and community supporters who use African-based storytelling methods to reach their audiences. They emphasize values such as honesty, friendship, love, integrity, manners, and self-determination.

“Paradise Blue" at Penumbra Theatre

Welcome to the Paradise Club, home to a makeshift family of musicians living out their lives in a fast-changing section of Detroit. After a bewitching stranger arrives with ready cash and a secretive agenda, the future of these friendships and the club itself fall into doubt. Morriseau’s noir-inflected musical drama captures people yearning to find their song in a community on the brink.

"Who I Am" art exhibit gallery opening

Tuesday, Feb. 4 | 6 – 7:30 p.m. | Davis Center (1250 W Broadway Ave.)

Join us for an opening reception and celebration of Who I Am - an exhibition of local Black artists including students, staff and art from the Minnesota African American Heritage Museum. Includes snacks and drinks. The "Who I Am" exhibit will be open Feb. 3 - March 1.

Hall STEM Academy

Monday, Feb. 10 | 9 – 10:15 a.m.

"Engineering Black Joy" will feature African Americans in math and science. All parents of Hall students are invited to join us for chicken and waffles at 9 a.m. with a capstone student showcase from 9:00 - 10:15 a.m.

Join us for Coffee with Caregivers from 8:15 – 9:00 a.m. including breakfast sandwiches and fruit catered by Sammy's Eatery in Minneapolis. Following Coffee with Caregivers we will have an all-school assembly and our own Marguerite Dowdy will provide drumming while students from our 4th and 5th grade classes will share a Langston Hughes poem in their voice.
